This is a detailed history of the Bristol Omnibus Company from 1945 to the mid 1980s. With country services ranging from Hereford to Salisbury,Cardiff to Oxford, as well as urban services covering Bristol, Bath, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Swindon and Weston-super-Mare, this truly was one of the country's major bus operations.
The period covered ranges from the postwar boom in bus traffic when double-deckers replaced single-deckers, through the 1970s when that trend was reversed, to the 1980s when again double-deckers found favour as the company sought to re-plan its services to cater for as many of its existing passengers as possible with the minimum of resources.
A variety of former employees have added their own interpretations to important events in the company's history. In addition they have recorded their personal memories of sad or amusing incidents that were part of the everyday life of working on the road, in the workshops or in the offices of such a major bus operation.
