The third book in our series focusing on the companies formed 20 years ago when CIÉ was split up by the Irish government, looks at the activities of Bus Éireann, since its formation.
Bus Éireann’s role was to provide a range of bus services outside the Dublin city area. These included town operations in places like Drogheda, Dundalk, Athlone and Sligo and more intensive services in the others cities in the Republic. The boom in the Irish economy in the1990s created a surge in the demand for public transport. Soaring house prices in Dublin led many people employed in the capital to live further and further away to find accommodation they could afford. This brought many new passengers onto Bus Éireann services. Bus Éireann was also allowed to compete with Irish Railways on express services.
Since 1987 Bus Éireann has made significant investments in vehicles and infrastructure, with new bus stations and depots being constructed. This book traces these developments over the last 20 years, looking at the company‘s fleet and the services provided and how these have evolved. The book is right up to date as it includes coverage of the many additional services which Bus Eireann provided to cope with the crowds attending the Ryder Cup golf competition, which was held in Kildare in the Autumn of 2006.
