Based on:
The locos of class 24 were delivered from 1926 onwards for passenger duties in central Germany. The locos were a "parallel" type to the class 64. Numerous parts and construction groups were interchangeable. At the start, they were originally used on the long branch line routes of East and West Prussia. There they were given the nickname of "Prancing Horses".

In 1926, the first examples of the class 24 from the manfacturers Schichau (24 001 - 24019) and Linke Hofmann  (24 031 - 24 037) were delivered.  78 further engines followed until 1939.  In 1929 another 69 locomotives had been delivered to Stettin, Schwerin, Stuttgart, Regensburg und Munster, so that, in a relatively short period of time, (including the Class 64) the DR had accumulated a large number of "modern" branch line locomotives.
